When two ENF Renshi visit NY

by Loïc Delalande

On April 11th and 12th, 2026, the annual naginata spring training camp was held in New Jersey, USA. Under the guidance of Ellery Engalla and her team, a strong turnout of over 20 people gathered to welcome Mark Berghaan Sensei and Loïc Delalande Sensei, both Renshi Naginata.

The organization was flawless, with a dedicated Zen Nihon Kata class for the higher-ranked students on Friday evening. The main training camp began the following day at 9:00 AM. Two groups were formed: the Yudansha, led by Berghaan Sensei/Engalla Sensei, and Delalande Sensei/Pomeroy Sensei. A rotation system was implemented to allow everyone to benefit from the experts’ instruction.

The training focused on basic techniques, kihon, shikake oji, followed by technical preparation for the grading tests scheduled for Saturday afternoon. A Taikai shiai (sparring session) was offered to all participants, allowing them to apply the techniques discussed during the seminar. The seminar concluded with a free jigeiko (sparring session) with the instructors present. Ellery, Rebecca, and the entire staff rose to the occasion, providing everyone with a high-quality seminar in the tradition and spirit of Budo, promoting the values of brotherhood and mutual respect.

A huge thank you to everyone for their hard work and commitment to giving their best. I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to Ellery for his kindness and the warm welcome he extended to us during this short stay in New Jersey
