Naginata Seminar with Sensei Kaoru Sumi Hanshi at Shubukan Dojo, Turin

by Alice Fontana

On June 14th and 15th, the Shubukan Dojo in Turin had the honor of hosting a naginata seminar led by Sensei Kaoru Sumi, Hanshi. Despite the intense summer heat, the event was a remarkable success, bringing together a diverse group of practitioners. At its peak, the seminar included 13 participants ranging in age from 7 years old to seasoned adult practitioners, all eager to learn from the renowned
teacher.

Throughout the weekend, the seminar covered a wide array of essential naginata practices. These included kihon (fundamental movements), suburi (basic swings), shikake-oji (attack and counter techniques), and bogu techniques (sparring with armor). For the more advanced practitioners, there was also focused training on the Zen Nihon no Kata, the formal forms of All Japan Naginata.
Sensei Sumi placed particular emphasis on the importance of relaxation and elegance in movement, highlighting how proper breathing and strong, well-timed kiai are fundamental to executing techniques with precision and effectiveness. Her teaching approach combined depth and clarity, creating an atmosphere of concentration and respect.

Special attention was given to the lower-ranked students, especially to the youngest participant of the seminar, a 7-year-old practitioner who also had the unique opportunity to receive guidance from Sumi Masatake Hanshi, 8th dan in kendo. On Sunday morning, the seminar concluded with kyu examinations for practitioners from both the Shubukan and Umi no Tsuyosa dojos. The exam panel consisted of Sensei Kaoru Sumi Hanshi, Yolanda Vanneste (Yondan), Emanuele Giberna (Sandan), and Alice Fontana (Shodan), who served as tachiai-nin. Congratulations are in order for the four practitioners who successfully passed their grading exams: one achieved 6th kyu, two earned 5th kyu, and one attained 2nd kyu.
Well done to all!

This seminar was a valuable experience for everyone involved, enriching our understanding and appreciation of naginata. A heartfelt thank you to Sensei Sumi for her generosity, expertise, and inspiration.
